Segments can be helpful if you want to segment your contacts. Let’s get started!
Business Value: Learn how to filter out your contacts into different segments to send them emails and text messages.
Getting Started
We have created this guide to show you How to Create a Segment. By segmenting your contacts, you will be able to send emails and text messages to specific contact lists that should not be sent to your entire list of contacts.
If a written guide isn’t your preferred format, click here to view this information in a video guide.
Accessing Segments
We’ll start by clicking the Segments tab in the main navigation.
Creating Segments
Once there, click the “+Add Segment” button to create your segment. This will prompt you to name your list and add a description. Once done, click “Save”.
On the next page, you will have the option to create filters to properly segment your list.
Let’s break down the filters that are available.
Filters and Examples
Equal To
The Equal To filter does NOT work for the "Tags" field which can contain multiple tags. To filter your list using tags, please use the Contains filter.
The Equal To filter is used to specify what the field must be. If it doesn’t meet the criteria you’ve requested to “equal to,” it will not be added to your segment.
Example:
In this example, we will be working on a list for all contacts in Georgia. We want to create a list containing every contact in our system that has Georgia/GA as their state. We will create 2 filters since we want to make sure that both Georgia and GA are pulled for this list.
The parameters for the first filter will be State that is Equal To and type in Georgia in the next field. In the fourth field select “or.” You will then click the green “+” to add another filter.
The parameters for the second filter will be State that is Equal To and type in GA in the next field. You can leave the fourth field as the default and.
This will pull all of the contacts who have Georgia or GA listed as their state.
Not Equal To
The Not Equal To filter does NOT work for the "Tags" field which can contain multiple tags. To filter your list using tags, please use the Does Not Contain filter.
The Not Equal To filter is used to specify what the field should not be. If it doesn’t meet the criteria you’ve requested to “not equal to,” it will not be added to your segment.
Example:
In this example we will be working on the mass email list we created at the beginning. We want to create a list with every contact that has an email address.
The parameters for this list will be Email that is Not Equal To and leave the next field blank. This will pull all the contacts whose email field has some value.
This will pull all of your contacts with an email address in the email field and exclude any who do not have an email address.
Contains
The Contains filter is used to specify what tags the field must contain. If it doesn’t meet the criteria of the tags it must “contain,” it will not be added to your segment.
Example:
In this example, we will be working on a list for which clients have been given a “pet owner” tag. We want to create a list that includes every contact that has the tag “pet owner” to see who is a pet owner from our contacts.
The parameters for this list will be Tag that Contains in the next field type pet owner. This will pull all the contacts who have the “pet owner” tag.
This will pull a list of all your pet owner contacts!
The Contains filter can be used to pull a list of all contacts who are on your Do Not Contact list by selecting a filter that searches for the value "unsubscribed" contained in the Do Not Contact list field from the lead field dropdown.

Do Not Contain
The Do Not Contain filter is used to specify what tags the field should not contain. If it doesn’t meet the criteria you’ve requested of the tags that it “does not contain,” it will not be added to your segment. This filter can be useful when a contact is assigned multiple tags.
Example:
In this example, we will be working on a list for cat and dog owners only. Clients have been given a “cat owner” or “dog owner” tag along with the “pet owner” tag. We want to create a list that includes every contact that has the tag “cat owner” or “dog owner” and excludes “fish owner” to see who is a cat or dog owner from our contacts.
The parameters for this list will be Tag that Do Not Contain in the next field type fish owner. This will pull all the contacts who do not have the “fish owner” tag, but are pet owners of cats and dogs.
Note: If you have contacts with multiple tags but want to narrow it down to solely cat and owner tags make sure to also make the parameters to add the additional tags or else your list will produce a list of all clients with ALL other tags but will exclude “fish owner”. Follow the parameters above and replace “fish owner” with the additional tags. Remember to also mark it as “and” and click the green “+” to add another filter with your additional tags.
